What questions should you ask a prospective psychotherapist?
The following is a list of questions that will help you make a decision about working with
any psychotherapist. Since Psychotherapy Network does not assume liability for the individual
psychotherapist's mode of practice or physical location, it is important that you explore these
issues with each provider you contact.
- Does the provider treat the issues on which you wish to work?
- Does the provider offer expertise -- via postdoctoral training or experience -- in specific areas?
- How does the provider describe her or his psychotherapy approach?
- What is the provider's fee by service requested, and how is payment requested?
- What appointments does the provider have available that fit with your schedule?
- How does the individual psychologist work with insurance companies for client reimbursement?
- Are there any specific parameters of confidentiality given the psychologist's theory of practice, the issues on which you desire to work, and your intention to file for insurance reimbursement?
- Is the psychologist's practice and office space covered by professional insurance?
In addition, Psychotherapy Network recommends that you check with the Illinois Licensing Board
regarding the status of any psychotherapist with whom you decide to work, whether s/he is listed
above or is found by other means.
